Love's Voice

February 2014

The cover photo of blue birch trees demonstrates the expression of an artist's talents sharing their creativity with society. Carrying this unknown artist's vision forward, Love's Voice challenges each of us to draw upon our individual talents in a mutually beneficial way—by opening society's closet doors and shedding light on hidden and ignored social issues.

One such issue, heavy on both societies and the author's heart, is the deeply neglected care of our mentally ill. Within 24 hours after being denied mental health treatment at the University of Washington Hospital, Al Drinkwine's son Troy took his life—a tragedy that unfolded shortly after President Reagan slashed funding for state mental health programs. Our Creator bestowed upon each of us a commission to "love one another." By opening the door and exposing these closeted injustices, we stretch out our hands to individuals in need.

Peace is Blooming

April 2015

In a world filled with violence, chaos, and despair, Al Drinkwine dares to imagine that things could be different. In this collection of poems and reflections, he offers a vision of society where might does not always make right and money is not the true measure of wealth.

The reflections and poems are organized to mirror the life cycle of a plant—drawing powerful comparisons between the growth of seeds and the growth of ideas. Small victories and waning hope must be tended like delicate shoots in order for true peace to bloom in our society and throughout the world. Come walk through this garden where ideas are given space to grow.

Silence or Voices

February 2020

Poetry is inclusive when spirituality blends with individual and cultural needs. Choices originate on a personal basis and, when nourished, expand locally—this is the way the cultural garden of change and peace blooms. A seed becomes a plant. A plant, when watered properly, provides nourishment to the spirit, body, and mind.

When one lights a candle and shares their warming light with others, numerous candles will cast light on our path toward peace. So let's light and share our candles.

Life's Tree Whispers

A Spiritual Call to Conscience in a Divided World

May 2026

A powerful work of spiritual nonfiction that blends poetic reflection with moral clarity, inviting readers to listen to the quiet signals of conscience that shape both personal life and collective destiny. Rooted in faith-based reflections, this book speaks to anyone searching for hope in troubled times—wrestling with questions of human dignity, ethical responsibility, and what it truly means to live with compassion in an increasingly divided world.

Through short reflections, lyrical prose, and lived experience, Al Drinkwine explores themes of social justice spirituality, peace, moral responsibility, and the cost of indifference. Grounded in real moments of loss, healing, love, and awakening, this book challenges the reader to choose love over fear, unity over division, and conscience over silence. It asks what happens to society when empathy fades—and what becomes possible when people reclaim their shared responsibility for one another.

Written for those who believe faith belongs not only in private belief, but in how we treat others, care for our communities, and protect the moral roots of democracy. These pages encourage healing through compassion, restoring decency, and nurturing a vision of humanity guided by conscience rather than power.

Hope Flourishes Through Endurance

April 2025

Many closets are stuffed with individuals, ideas, secrets, fears, brilliant ideas, lights longing to shine, love desiring to be shared, and so much more. Throughout his life, Al Drinkwine has been amazed at the issues people fear discussing openly.

The passing of his younger brother Milt—preceded by his husband Tom's death—shed a bright light on his brother's chosen closetization. Serving as his estate's personal representative, Al was privileged to find several booklets Milt had written disclosing his deepest feelings. Milt was the head nurse for a prominent university hospital's organ transplant center, and yet felt the need to remain in a closet about being gay. Al chose to share a few of his brother's thoughts publicly, and in doing so, decided to share insights he himself had closed for too many years.
